How I Maintain a Spirit of Joy (Even When Naija Is Hard)

Like most people, I’ve had seasons of weariness, discouragement, and uncertainty. But through it all, I’ve learned that joy isn’t just an emotion—it’s a spiritual posture. And the beautiful thing about joy in Christ is that it’s not dependent on circumstances. It’s rooted in something deeper and eternal. Here’s how I’ve learned to maintain a spirit of joy, with God’s Word as my guide

I Choose Joy Daily

Joy is a choice. Every day, I wake up and decide what kind of mindset I will carry. I’ve realized that my default can be worry or frustration if I don’t intentionally shift my focus.

Scripture reminds me:

“This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.” — Psalm 118:24 (ESV)

Even on hard days, I can rejoice because the day itself is a gift. I remind myself that God is sovereign over this day—and that alone is enough to spark joy.

I Anchor My Joy in God, Not My Circumstances

Happiness may come and go, but joy rooted in the Lord is stable. When I start to feel overwhelmed, I ask myself: Am I basing my joy on something temporary or eternal?

“Though the fig tree should not blossom, nor fruit be on the vines… yet I will rejoice in the Lord; I will take joy in the God of my salvation.” — Habakkuk 3:17-18 (ESV)

Habakkuk’s words have comforted me during seasons of scarcity and confusion. Even when life doesn’t look fruitful, I can rejoice in who God is—my Savior and Sustainer.

I Cultivate Gratitude

Nothing fuels joy like gratitude. When I start feeling down, I begin to list what I’m thankful for—even small things. Gratitude shifts my eyes off of what’s lacking and onto what’s already been given.

> “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” — 1 Thessalonians 5:18 (ESV)

I’ve learned that gratitude isn’t just polite—it’s powerful. It rewires my heart toward joy.

I Stay Connected to God’s Presence

When I’m disconnected from God, my joy slowly drains. But when I intentionally spend time in His presence—whether in worship, prayer, or reading His Word—I feel joy rise again.

“You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy.” — Psalm 16:11 (ESV)

Joy is found in His presence—not just during Sunday worship, but in the quiet moments when I seek Him alone.

I Let Joy Be My Strength

There are days when I feel too weak to move forward. But I remind myself that joy itself is a source of strength. When I lean into God’s joy, I find resilience I didn’t know I had.

“Do not grieve, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.” — Nehemiah 8:10 (NIV)

This verse has carried me through trials. It reminds me that joy isn’t naive—it’s strong. It helps me endure.—

Final Thoughts

To Maintain a spirit of joy doesn’t mean I ignore pain or pretend everything’s perfect. It means I anchor myself in the unchanging truth of who God is. It means I open my heart to His presence daily and allow His joy to carry me.Joy is not a destination—it’s a decision I make again and again. And every time I choose it, I find Him waiting there with open arms.
