Making friends in a new country is not an easy feat…. especially when you are a self proclaimed introvert. You really have to put yourself out there. This will definitely challenge you and push you outside of your comfort zone. It certainly did for me. It was important to me that my husband wasn’t my only friend. I need female friends that can inspire and empower me and whom I can vent to. So I had to be very intentional about stepping out of myself and reaching out to people, being the first one to make a move, being the first one to call and ask how one is doing… buy gifts, invite them out. It’s a whole program of giving and as the Holy Spirit revealed to me… If I want to make a friend, I have to be a friend.
Thankfully, I’ve found that Nigerians are super friendly and hospitable so I’ve made several friends over the course of the years starting with my Your Loveworld Singers. They have just embraced me and taken me in like a sister. I have wonderful stories about all of them, which I will share as time goes by.
And I would be remiss if I didn’t talk about my former colleague turned bestie. She was so instrumental in me maintaining my sanity when I first came. She would help to interpret peoples words and actions so I could understand what they meant and not always take offense. Her insight certainly helped me understand many of the things Obi said and the traditional/cultural teachings of the Igbos. That reduced many arguments!
