How do I say this? I don’t like being called,”Ma.” I know it’s part of the training here. You are taught to call any lady that is older than you, “Ma” as a form of respect. It’s the same in North America. We are taught to call an older lady Ma’am. However, there’s a bit of a divide between the north and the south. It’s still a very dear tradition for those in the south, meanwhile, those of us from the northern part have no interest in it. I am from the north and I really prefer that you call me by my name…Chevaunne.
I understand that it is how we show regard to those that are older than us. I also call older ladies ma or ma’am, depending on where I am. But for me, if you know me well enough to know my name, I would prefer to be called Chevaunne.
Why do I prefer to be called Chevaunne?
- My name has meaning. The name Chevaunne means God is gracious. Every time my name is called its an affirmation. Its actually a word of praise as we recognize His goodness.
- My name is unique. As I got older and began to understand the meaning of my name, I really began to love the uniqueness of my name. I’ve never been in any institution or organization where I share the same name with someone else. I am usually the one and only Chevaunne in that place. I’m definitely the only Chevaunne in Nigeria.
- I know you are talking to me. When in a crowd, if someone says, “good afternoon, ma.” I won’t know that you are speaking to me. However, If you say, “good afternoon, Chevaunne” I will know you are talking to me and will warmly respond with a smile and even a hug!
But, how?!?
Now, after all these years of training, how will you suddenly start calling me by my name. Your parents will beat you if they hear, abi?! Well, here are some things you can keep in mind.
- The world is big and with the internet making it more within reach, you will have to learn to relate with different people from all over the world.
- If you are part of the household of faith, you can always add sis. Sis. Chevaunne also works.
- Respect, just like love must be shown in word and deed. You must do both!
Ultimately, I know some will still call me ma because it is just so deeply a part of your upbringing. It’s a good training and I am not trying to take that away from you. Please, do not apply these rules to anyone else. This is just me, Chevaunne, asking you to call me by my name. Don’t try it with any of your other African aunties! They no go gree!
