Faith And Works: Why Life is Both Spiritual and Practical

I didn’t realize how much rest my body needed. After a long weekend of praying and fasting like we just had, I knew I would rest on Monday but on Tuesday when I was still feeling so exhausted, I just had to relax. All that was going through my mind was, I need to do so many things but also my body just wasn’t budging. It was time to rest and recover. So what do we do in our life of faith when our humanity starts to show. Remember, life is spiritual but it is also practical. Paul said “If I don’t see your works, how can I believe you have faith.”

When I moved from Canada to Nigeria, I quickly learned that faith alone doesn’t fuel your generator during a blackout, and speaking in tongues won’t get pepper soup on the table. Life is deeply spiritual, yes. But it’s also deeply practical. And if we’re being honest? It takes both to thrive.

Faith Without Works is Dead

Let’s start with the Bible:

“Faith without works is dead.”James 2:17

This scripture isn’t saying faith is useless. It’s saying faith alone, without movement, is incomplete. You can pray for a job, but have you updated your CV? You can trust God for a husband, but are you healing, growing, and learning how to love?

Faith sets the foundation. It’s what keeps us going in tough seasons. But works? That’s how we partner with God to see His promises fulfilled.

Spiritual Realities Must Meet Practical Action

Life is spiritual first — I’ll never argue that. As a Christian woman, I believe everything starts in the spirit. Your thoughts, your words, your intentions — they shape the atmosphere of your life.

But here’s what I’ve come to know: you can’t just ‘sow’ in prayer and not ‘reap’ in action.
You’re trusting God for healing? Drink your water, eat well, exercise, and get medical checkups.
Believing for financial breakthrough? Honour God with your tithe, yes, and also learn how to budget and invest.

God can do the impossible, but He often waits for us to do the possible.

Practical Examples from My Naija Life

  1. Spiritual: I pray for peace in my marriage.
Practical: I also go to therapy, read books on communication, and zip my lips when unnecessary arguments arise.
  2. Spiritual: I trust God to grow my business.
Practical: I show up on social media, study marketing, and reach out to clients even when I’m shy.
  3. Spiritual: I declare safety for my home.
Practical: I also lock my doors and turn off the gas at night 😅

Let’s Be Balanced Women

It’s not either/or — it’s both/and.
You can be a praying woman and a planning woman.
You can anoint your business plans and pitch to clients.
You can believe in miracles and be wise with money.

We are spiritual beings in physical bodies — and our lives must reflect both.

Final Word: Faith Works, but You Must Work Too

Let your faith be the engine, but let your actions be the wheels. God is not glorified in laziness or wishful thinking. He’s glorified in faith and fruit. So go ahead — pray hard, fast deeply, believe big. But don’t forget to get up and do.

After all, sis, even Jesus worked as a carpenter before He started His ministry.

So true! I always remember Peter had to step outside the boat in order to walk on water!
