My favourite Nigerian food is yam porridge. But since this is my blog, I’m gonna be honest. I’m not a big fan of Nigerian food. This may be coming across wrong. Let me rephrase. I think I am over eating Nigerian food. I remember my first taste of jollof rice. It was so tasty and exciting. My taste buds where having the time of their life. That was several years ago when I was living in Canada. I used to love to go to the African store and order Jollof rice with beef and plantain. However, now I live in Nigeria and it’s no longer Nigerian food I get to eat on special occasions. It’s just food.. that we have to eat everyday.
If there is one thing I can say I miss about Canada, it is the variety of foods that are available from different parts of the world. Thai food, Chinese food, Mexican food, Mediterranean food and more were available at the click of a button (I used Uber eats a lot!!) But I feel that the options for food are so limited. It’s either rice or spag with your fav protein.
Thankfully, my pallet is open to receive new flavours… all I need are the ingredients.
One thing I make a lot that Obi also enjoys is a chicken salad. I know what you’re thinking. BORING! But salads can be very tasty, especially when you start throwing different ingredients that touch the sweet, spicy and savoury parts of your pallet. For example, I made a delicious pineapple salad a few weeks ago and added chopped up chicken breast. It was so tangy with the purple onions and then the sweetness of the pineapple made it so delectable.
I’m low-key trying to make our household a vegan household (Don’t tell Obi!) So I am trying a variety of salad recipes while incorporating Nigerian flavours. For example, that same pineapple salad with goat suya would be so delicious.
