In 2001 there was a major blackout that affected the whole eastern seaboard which included New York and Toronto. That was the first and the last time I ever experienced days without power. In Nigeria though, It’s like the grid just goes on vacation every 6-8 weeks. Just like that, no light for 3 days. And no light for three days means no water. It is the most frustrating thing to me. Its like NEPA will be the cause for divorce in this Nigeria.
The first time I experienced this trauma in Nigeria, I became a different person. I was angry, confused, agitated and lost. How can there be no power for so long? Why is the lack of power affecting the availability of water? Am I meant to just sit here in the dark? Before you ask, we do not have a generator because we have an inverter. Unfortunately, its currently not working. Eventually, my husband decided I should stay with his sister on the island. I packed my bags and was gone within the hour. I couldn’t take it anymore. Would you believe this power outage lasted for over two weeks!!
I saw my husband sitting at the dining table with a candle watching something on his phone when I finally came home. The atmosphere was looking so romantic. A part of me was sad that I left my husband alone for so long to endure this thing by himself. What happened to the vows we took? Is this how I’ll just run and leave when things get hard? Is this how NEPA will just run me out of my house? The best marriages endure the hard times together.
That day I decided within myself that I would not leave my husband again. NEPA will not come between me and my boo ever again. He’s been quite understanding though. On the next occasion when it was becoming unbearable for me, he got us a hotel room.
We really need to look at getting our inverter fixed. Please, send your recommendations in the comments. NEPA will not be the cause of my divorce in this Nigeria!
Oh! I found a link where they post when there’s an issue… for those of us who didn’t know.
