From Milk to Meat: How Spiritual Growth Transforms Your Understanding

My spiritual growth is of the upmost importance to me… I don’t joke with it. But I’ve really been challenged lately by the religious mindset that seems to dominate Nigeria. There are moments I honestly feel confused, wondering if something is wrong with me.
Am I too progressive?
Have I drifted from the Word?
Or is it that many believers simply aren’t growing in the word of God?

The Bible clearly says we should grow in grace and in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. But growth means progression. It means development. The things we learned in children’s church were good for that age, but that was the milk of the Word — the basics we could digest as spiritual babies.

At some point, you’re supposed to move from drinking milk to chewing meat… and even turning your own eba.

So let’s talk about what it really means to grow in grace and in knowledge — and why true spiritual maturity will absolutely evolve your mindset over time.

God Doesn’t Change — But You’re Supposed To

One of the most beautiful truths about God is His unchanging nature.
“I am the Lord, and I do not change” (Malachi 3:6).
“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever” (Hebrews 13:8).

God is consistent. Steady. Reliable. Eternal.
He doesn’t evolve, upgrade, adjust to culture nor does He wake up with new opinions.
He is perfectly wise, perfectly holy, and perfectly loving — always.

But you?
You’re meant to grow.

You’re meant to mature, transform, unlearn old ways of thinking, and embrace new understanding as the Holy Spirit leads you deeper into truth.

So What Does “Grow in Grace” Really Mean?

Growing in grace isn’t about becoming “extra spiritual” or collecting Bible verses like badges. It’s about transformation:

• You start seeing God more clearly.
• You begin understanding His heart, not just His commands.
• You respond to life with more patience, humility, and wisdom.
• You break old thought patterns that were shaped by fear, culture, or trauma.
• You become more like Jesus in character and mindset.

This is not instant or overnight.
This is steady, Spirit-led growth.

Your Ideology Should Change Over Time

As you grow in grace and knowledge:

  • Your opinions shift.
  • Your worldview matures.
  • Your emotional responses soften.
  • What you thought was “right” at 20 may not be what the Spirit reveals to you at 35.
  • You start letting truth readjust your thinking instead of letting your thinking dictate your faith.

This isn’t instability — it’s discipleship.

When you grow, you don’t become a different person.
You become the person God intended you to be all along.

But If God Doesn’t Change, How Am I Seeing Him Differently?

Here’s the secret:

God isn’t changing.
You’re just finally seeing Him accurately.

It’s like the sun.
The sun doesn’t move — the earth rotates.
Morning, noon, and evening are not the sun changing but your position changing.

The same is true with God:

  • As you mature, you notice parts of His character you never saw before.
  • You understand kindness where you once expected punishment.
  • You see wisdom where you once saw restriction.
  • You recognize love where you once sensed distance.

You are the one rotating.\This is you maturing and growing.

God has always been who He is.

Growth Means Transformation

If you never change, you’re not growing.

When the Bible invites you to “grow in grace,” it’s saying:
Let the Holy Spirit mature your thinking. Let your theology deepen, your heart expand and your understanding evolve.

You’re not called to become a rigid, unmovable version of yourself.
You’re called to become a Christlike version of yourself — alive, responsive, and transformed.

A Final Encouragement

Don’t fear growth. You are allowed to change your mind. There is room to discover God in deeper, clearer ways.

Growing in grace doesn’t mean God changes —
it means you are being changed into His likeness.

And that’s the beauty of walking with an unchanging God:
You become steady because He is steady; anchored because He is constant and transformed because He is truth.
