Starting Over in Nigeria

If you’ve ever made a big move like I did coming to Nigeria from Canada, then you know the challenge of starting over. Many of my Nigerian friends in Canada shared their experience of having to start from the bottom and build their way back up. In Nigeria, they were doctors, lawyers or engineers but Canada wouldn’t accept their credentials so they had to become janitors or personal support workers to make a living.

Now it’s my turn. It’s my turn to rebuild my reputation, rebuild my credibility and rebuild my network. Basically rebuild my life… or let’s call it a rebranding.

in Canada I was working as an administrative assistant in a real estate office. However, it wasn’t my long term plan. So coming here, I felt like I could be free to enter any industry. Initially, I was looking for work at the US or Canadian Embassy. I wanted to work with people that I understand and would understand me. Then I found out that there are no Canadians at the Canadian embassy… So I left that matter.

But I think I definitely need to upgrade my skills. I love that we are in a period where information and education is more easily accessible. It really changes the dynamic of our society. It makes it harder for people to be oppressed due to being uneducated or less educated. But I digress, upgrading my skills will open up more opportunities for me and that is an investment that is worth making when you are starting over.

I’m feeling very optimistic and so thrilled about the possibilities. In January, I made a financial goal for myself that I will start earning at least 1 Million Naira per month. That is appx $1,000 CAD or $650 USD. It’s not a lot but we will talk about the economics another day. For here and now, it is above average. The minimum wage is currently set at #70,000. So you can get an idea of where this goal stands.

When I shared my goal with my husband, he asked me how I plan to meet it and I had to answer him that I am not really sure at the moment but I am working with the Holy Spirit. I trust him to guide me along the way and as promised, He has been doing so. And by God’s grace, I am on track this year.

I know starting over can seem so daunting but if you really think about it, you’ve done it before. When you start going to a new school and have to make new friends or when you start your first job or a new job, or when you leave your parents house to live by yourself. These are all small acts of starting over. You may not move across the world to another country or maybe you might, either way, trust yourself, believe in yourself, hold on to your faith and go.

I would love to hear your starting over stories. Please share in the comments.
